Overview
Into The Fold is a supernatural short film directed by Andrea Manners. A woman tends to her laundry at a mysterious laundrette on Berlin’s Danziger Strasse. As the machines turn, her haunting past emerges from the folds of reality. Originally titled L’Appel Du Vide, the film explores the moment when a familiar place becomes something else entirely.
Production
The film was shot on location at a working laundrette in Berlin. When I came on board as editor, the production had a significant problem: no sound had been recorded during the shoot. Not even camera audio. This opened up an unexpected creative opportunity.
I pitched the director a concept: the missing sound could become the film’s secret weapon. By building the entire soundtrack from scratch, we could give the location itself a voice and make it a character in the story.
Post Production
I visited the actual locations to capture field recordings. The laundrette on Danziger Strasse, the street outside, and my own washing machine at home all contributed raw material. Every mechanical rattle, every water cycle, every ambient hum was recorded and placed into a Dolby Atmos surround mix built in DaVinci Resolve. The goal was to make the audience feel physically inside the space, surrounded by the building’s presence.
Üstün Yıldırım (Akkor) composed a score designed to work within the Atmos environment. Incidental sound and music became inseparable. You stop being able to tell where the laundrette ends and the score begins. That was the point. The location needed to feel alive, and then hungry.
I also handled the colour grade, leaning into the laundrette’s fluorescent palette and pulling warmth out of an inherently cold space. The film’s poster was also designed in-house by myself.
