Overview
Sun Sets South is a macabre psychological thriller directed by Roman Pfeiffer. Michael lives in isolation, consumed by social anxiety and paranoia. When a new neighbour moves in, Michael becomes convinced the man is hiding a dark secret. As the line between reality and fantasy dissolves, his psychiatrist tries to pull him back from the edge. But Michael is already too far gone.
Production
I was introduced to the project by sound designer Üstün Yıldırım (Akkor), who recommended me to director Roman Pfeiffer for the colour grade. After reviewing an early edit of the film, I made several editorial suggestions which Pfeiffer incorporated into a revised cut. This resulted in an additional editor credit alongside the grading work.
Post Production
The film’s grade needed to serve the story’s descent into paranoia. Early scenes carry a naturalistic, muted palette. As Michael’s grip on reality loosens, the colour shifts become more pronounced and the colours reflect that. Contrast deepens. Shadows close in. The goal was to make the audience feel the walls tightening before they consciously register what has changed.
